LYSISTRATA! Over 20 Years Ago!

As an actor, I am dramatic. Therefore, I am VERY fond of the classics! Here's a photo of me in the Greek Classic "Lysistrata" more than 20 years ago. It appeared in all the local NYC papers. I am so happy that my return to the stage will be in Rome Neal's award winning adaptation of the Shakespeare classic "Julius Caesar" set in Africa!

"A WOUND IN TIME" AVAILABLE FOR OUTREACH AND RETURNING TO THE STAGE

"A Wound In Time" was written for the love of a good drama, and more importantly, to address certain social issues that plague us. The issues of racism, classism, homophobia, intra-racism, colorism, interracial dating, the stigma and trap of being an ex-convict, psychological issues like self-esteem, depression, and post traumatic stress disorder, are reflected in the play. The characters are either victims, and/or guilty of perpetuating the problems that lead to conflict. When it comes from outside it is threatening. But when it comes from within it is more dangerous, as these behaviors are usually either accepted and ingrained in the culture, OR swept under the rug, never to be acknowledged or examined.

This is why I am making a condensed version of the play for my ensemble to perform at colleges and community organizations for cultural diversity appreciation. It is indeed a raw, and edgy drama, with adult content. However, it is entertaining; being educational without preaching. For more information please contact me at steph@wetprods.com. Go to play's blog http://www.awoundintime.com/ for synopsis and other info.

MY "HOMEMADE HEADSHOT" DUE TO SUDDEN RETURN TO THE STAGE

During the run of my play at Nuyorican Poets Cafe auditions were being held for Shakespeare Julius Caesar set in Africa. Since I would be in the theatre setting up for my show I decided to audition for the hell of it, as I do so love the classics. Well, I unexpectedly got the role of the soothsayer. My last headshots were taken in the 1980's and there was no time to see a photographer soooo I took a recent candid shot and cropped and played with it... Rome Neal's adaptation opens at Nuyorican on Dec. 2nd.

CAST AS THE SOOTHSAYER IN ROME NEAL'S JULIUS CAESAR

Besides my play having done soo well at Nuyorican Poets Cafe this weeknd, I was also cast in Nuyorican's Theatre Director, Rome Neal's adaptation of Shakespeare's "Julius Caesar" set in Africa. Being that my memory is not what it used to be I sought a role with the least lines to memorize. Luckily, that would be the role of the Soothsayer, a VERY dramatic role, indeed!!!! It opens in December!

RACISM: What's The Point?

While I was developing my documentary "The Descendants of Africa:Evolution of a People and Culture" I also designed an anti-racism workshop titled "Racism: What's the Point?". It is an exercise showing the inaccuracies in the terms and categories we/society use to describe ourselves and others. These terms create divisions that would not ordinarily exists.

MY LATEST CREATION: MY SHOW'S COLLAGE POSTER AND FLYER

This is the poster, and flyer I made for the show. I went all over Spanish/Italian Harlem (the play's setting) taking photos. I then cut and pasted them to foam board to make a collage. I then Photoshopped it to give it a brick effect. I am completely Photoshop illiterate so it was quite a task. The text is not quite the way I wanted it but everytime I tried to change it things started moving around. So here it is! The flyer was a lot easier, made by just adding one of the photos taken of a mural at the 110th Street subway station.

WHAT DO ME AND JACKIE CHAN HAVE IN COMMON?

Pre-sale tix @ only $20 go on sale in August for "A Wound In Time" at http://www.nuyorican.org

In my very first film I was supposed to be featured background but ended up with a speaking role when the director Philip Chan (who years later would direct "Supercop" with Jackie Chan and "Bloodsport") gave me a scenario and asked me what would I say... He loved my answer and told me to use those lines in response to the action. That was also my first time as a screenwriter, now that I think about it. LOL

Raw Documentary Footage From "The Descendants of Africa" Starting With: The Gullah Gee Chee

Pre-sale tix @ only $20 go on sale in August for "A Wound In Time" at http://www.nuyorican.org
After almost 9 years I have finally looked at the last tapes that I filmed just after 9/11. It was a task, but once I found a simple way of converting the footage to upload I almost forgot the reason that I had ceased filming in the first place. This is a major breakthrough and hopefully will lead to my resuming filming. To start, I have uploaded raw footage of the beautiful landscape of St. Helena Island, South Carolina, and of a Native making fishing nets. This craft was handed down through the generations. You will also see a few seconds of baskets. I will have footage of that tradition; another passed down from the Rice Coast of Africa, the origin of many of their ancestors.

DOCUMENTARY FOOTAGE UPLOAD

Pre-sale tix @ only $20 go on sale in August for "A Wound In Time" at http://www.nuyorican.org

The uploading of some of the wonderful raw footage I shot of Creoles; Black Indians; Gullahs; Garifuna; Nova Scotians; New England Cape Verdeans; Afro Mexican and Peruvians about their ethnic and cultural heritages will have to wait until I receive the adapter for the memory stick IN THE MAIL. It has been almost 10 years since I was emotionally able to look at anything related to my documentary, so I am frustrated about the delay, to say the least. Stay tuned...

This classic music video took two days to shoot. We went riding around in a Winnebago to different locations of where each rapper came from. I got the role of the busy body neighbor because my head shot was so bad that it made me look older. The director complained about my looking younger than he expected so I told him not to worry that I'd hook myself up so that I'd look older. Thus you have the crazy sunglasses and hair rollers! Pre-sale tix @ only $20 go on sale in August for "A Wound In Time" at http://www.nuyorican.org

Regarding my documentary, I will be working on trying to post clips of footage shot so far. Since filming was done some years ago some of the footage must undergo conversion in order to upload. I am working on it and perhaps one day may resume filming... Stay tuned!

P.S. Found a solution to part of my problem so look for some documentary clips hopefully by the weekend!

THE TEE SHIRT AND JEWELRY DESIGNER:tribalspirit

Pre-sale tix @ only $20 on sale in August for "A Wound In Time" at http://www.nuyorican.org

My documentary, "The Descendants of Africa: Evolution of a People and Culture" gave to birth to a few off-shoots, vehicles in which I could disseminate the valuable info I obtained in my research, and while filming interviews. I started a company called tribalspirit inc. and sold tee shirts that came with little booklets of historical info regarding peoples of Native American and/or African descent throughout the Americas. I designed the shirts and sold them on a web site with some ethnic jewelry that I designed as well. The website and tees were to help combat the ignorance that contributes to the "isms" that plague our society, and to promote the appreciation of diversity. As with my other projects, I lost interest due to depression brought on by 9/11. Happily, I am back on track and resuming as well as resurrecting old projects; and due to popular demand will be bringing back the tees, in black only. See the photos of the tees with the design on the back of all the countries in the Americas in a setting sun. On the sleeve is the logo of an arrow crossed with a spear. Across the chest are the words "New World Tribe", which represents the "new breed of people" created from the colonization of the Americas. I hope to have the new tribalspirit site up by the Summer.

THE POET: A CULTURAL THANG!

Pre-sale tix @ only $20 go on sale in August for "A Wound In Time" at http://www.nuyorican.org

I bounce my butt to the beat of the bongo
Shoulders shimmy and shake
Grind my hips from side to side
Groovin' to the music
Groovin' in my soul
I'm home, in my own place--the dance floor--where I'm a star!
Men get hot and horny when they see me feel the joy.
My body tells a story
I move into you slowly
Just to tease!
But then you rise between your thighs
Sorry brother! I'm not hear to please
You see, I'm expressing my freedom of expression
My need to dance ABOVE the floor
Expressing my culture in the purest form
It's not about sex--but all about joy
Profound and deep and raw!
And I refuse to apologize for my culture!

I performed this poem back in da day at Nuyorican Poets Cafe at their Poetry Slam!

No, my lips aint draggin' on da floor
And my nose aint spread from shore to shore
But I'm a Jungle Lover all the way!
I like buckin', bitin', and scratchin'
Cussin', howlin' and screamin'
I'm all over da place!
Sheets all on da flo'!
Mattress on da wall
Swingin' from chandeliers
I have a new hairdo by the time I'm through!
Hair standin' on my head like the Bride of Frankenstein's
That's how you know that I had me a R-E-A-L good time!

NEW WORLD PEOPLE

Pre-sale tix @ only $20 go on sale in August for "A Wound In Time" at http://www.nuyorican.org

New World People, you know who you are
A NEW BREED, existing as you are because of the ambitions
of proud and gallant travelers long ago
A whirlpool of races, colors, and nations brought together
A part of history-in-progress
Offspring of oppression, of aggression, of taboo, and yes... Of love
Spilling over, speaking many tongues, of old nations and new nations
Clawing through the thickets of hard times and hard lives
Bellies rising and falling through the centuries--The children fathered by many races--by many colors--by many nations
For five centuries breastfed and weaned in the darkest, coldest corners beyond
a society's mainstream
You grew to carry the legacy in this NEW WORLD, strange to your father
NEW WORLD PEOPLE... YOU are the legacy.

At rise is scene of present day debutante ball. Then blackout and slow rise to scene of a party circa 1802 in western Louisiana. African women mingle with French and Spaniard gentlemen...A shy and apprehensive Lizette meets Ferdinand Montoya... A year later Lizette is pregnant and living in a grand house and large plantation on the Red River that Ferdinand has purchased. Her pushy mother, who lives with them, continues making her potions and love perfumes . She sells them to hopeful mothers who bargain with European men of means to accept their daughters. Ferdinand is delayed in Cuba on business and writes her of talk of problems ahead regarding the apparent acquisition of Louisiana by the British...

WILSON EXCLUSIVE TALENT PRODUCTIONS NOW A DOT COM...

My production company is now finally a dot com. However, the name of "wetproductions.com" was already taken so I had to settle for "wetprods.com". Sounds kind of harsh don't you think? Anyway it will probably be easier to remember...

Working on my play's "A Wound In Time" website to get the word out of the show's launch at the famous Nuyorican Poets Cafe in October. Working on a new script titled "Blood Makes The Red River Flow". It's a fictional drama based on some of the research that I gathered in filming my documentary "The Descendants of Africa: Evolution of a People and Culture". I was covering the Creoles of Louisiana and was fascinated by what I discovered. Since there's no money to continue filming (was working 3 jobs funding the project) I'll just use all my valuable info and disseminate it in other ways. That's what I did when I designed my tee shirts and attached little booklets of historical facts, as it pertained to the people of African descent in the Diaspora West. So until the funds come rolling in you can look for the information on the stage, with tee shirts, and beyond....
